What Is Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Called

Warning: Major spoilers for Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge await ye, garrrrr…

Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge, AKA Dead Men Tell No Tales in the US, is now in cinemas and it's really rather good.

As well as being the strongest sequel, Salazar's Revenge manages the fine balance of being both a soft reboot and a satisfying potential finale to the whole franchise. Box office figures aren't in as we write, but we're willing to go out on a limb and suggest it'll make a boatload of cash.

So it would make no sense for Disney to park this beast just yet – here's what you can expect from Pirates going forward.

Here's where everyone is now

Deep breath...

Here's where the main players are and who might return:

JACK

First and easiest is Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) who, after five films' worth of curses, debts and narrow escapes, is, at the end of Salazar's Revenge, alive, well and in control of the Black Pearl. He's sailing off on new adventures with trusty first mate Gibbs (Kevin McNally).

WILL and ELIZABETH

With their son Henry (Brenton Thwaites) lifting all curses at sea by breaking the Trident of Poseidon, Will Turner is freed from the Flying Dutchman and reunited with his wife Elizabeth Swann. Will was cursed when he stabbed the heart of Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) in At World's End, leading to Davy tumbling into the maelstrom, but more on him in a bit.

BARBOSSA

However, freeing Will from the curse came at a heavy cost as Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) sacrificed himself to save his daughter Carina (Kaya Scodelario). But at least it meant that Salazar (Javier Bardem) was defeated as, having been turned human again, he falls to his supposed doom at the bottom of the ocean.

CARINA and HENRY

It seems very possible that any continuation of the franchise would include our young newcomers Henry and Carina.

We'd be keen to see more of Kaya Scodelario's independent astronomer, yet, Salazar's Revenge gives no hint that she has a desire to be a pirate. Like Henry getting his father back, Carina's one big quest to find the Trident of Poseidon is already complete – though that certainly doesn't rule her out from further quests.

Perhaps the discovery of her heritage – namely that's she's Barbossa's daughter, could provide some motivation? Maybe she'll even find a way to bring daddy back from the dead? Of course, Barbossa has returned from the dead before in Dead Man's Chest, so it's not necessarily the end for him. Stranger things have happened at sea.

Or maybe she'll join forces with Jack, and ditch boring old Henry. After all, Jack even hints to Gibbs in the final shot that he's going to use the stars to find new treasure, so who better than Carina to be the Black Pearl's navigator? It'd be a way to keep the spirit of Barbossa around.

THOSE OTHER ONES

As for the people we met during On Stranger Tides, it seems that Disney has pretty much forgotten them. Philip (Sam Claflin) and Syrena (Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey) are presumably still happily in love in the ocean, while Angelica (Penelope Cruz) is still stranded on that island and Blackbeard (Ian McShane) is dead thanks to the Fountain of Youth. Ironic, that.

The post-credits sequence

Having been reunited at the end of the movie, we see Will and Elizabeth sleeping peacefully in their home, before Davy Jones – or his claw, at least – creeps into the room. But, surprise, it's a dream as Will wakes with a start, only for the camera to slowly pan down to some barnacles on the floor.

Does this mean Pirates 6 could see a return of Davy Jones to reclaim Will Turner as a member of his watery crew? Is Will still cursed? This doesn't make a whole load of narrative sense but it does leave the door ajar for Will and Elizabeth to return to the franchise. Maybe Elizabeth will actually get a line this time?

While we wouldn't expect Keira Knightley to want to return to the franchise in any major role, Orlando Bloom has been teasing that Salazar's Revenge leaves "room for more" when it comes to future sequels. Perhaps we'll see some more father-son business with Henry Turner?

The finale?

Of course, if for whatever reason Salazar's Revenge doesn't bring in the bounty at the box office, the movie could be the final outing for Captain Jack.

Disney has even been laying the groundwork for it to be the final outing, with the trailers stating that it is "the final adventure". However, the word "final" can be taken with a massive pinch of salt when it comes to long-running franchises.

A soft reboot

Instead, we think we'll look back on Salazar's Revenge as a soft reboot of the franchise, freeing Jack of all connections to the previous movies. Though that doesn't mean Jack will be walking the plank. Series producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Digital Spy recently that the franchise will never carry on without Jack.

Salazar's Revenge does certainly feel like the bookend to the original trilogy, though, with the way it ties off the story of Will and Elizabeth, not to mention the death of Barbossa, the only major character to appear in all four movies apart from Captain Jack and Gibbs. Co-director Joachim Ronning called this "the beginning of the finale" though that doesn't really mean anything concrete.

Disney may well decide to bid farewell to all other existing characters and narratives for the time being and embark on standalone Captain Jack Sparrow adventures – this ship could be sailing for a long time yet.
